Looking for a story in which the heart does not run ahead of God’s leading? Where romance is found in the tender every day moments of falling in love? And the light of God’s truth prevails over the dark truth of history to inspire us to do right, even when it’s not convenient or comfortable?
That’s a lot to ask.
But The Golden Bride delivers.
OBSERVATIONS & CRITIQUE
Following a wonderful first line, “No matter how much he thought he deserved to be one, Olivia Brighton’s husband of six weeks was not a king.” the reader travels to San Francisco, 1849 for one woman’s adventure in a time where men sought their fortunes above all else.
The characters experience real tragedy and struggle while living out their faith in difficult times. A strong message of repentance and forgiveness fills the pages, but never sounds preachy.
Distasteful historical details and sensitive issues are presented in a factual (but not overtly graphic) manner, and the main characters respond in God-honoring ways that make it easy to read.
The Golden Bride is a lovely story of finding love in a time and place where love is an anomaly and giving up hope the norm.
RECOMMENDATION
I love history. I love romance. With a charming story, and delightful romance, I recommend The Golden Bride as a clean historical romance.
Have you ever read stories of historical San Francisco or the days of the gold rush? What surprised you most?
